The Opuntia monacantha, commonly known as Drooping Prickly Pear, Cochineal Prickly Pear, or Barbary Fig, is a large branching cactus known for its distinctive drooping pads and tree-like growth. It is native to South America and can develop into a substantial succulent shrub or small tree.
- Appearance: Features bright green, flattened paddle-like stems that become noticeably drooping as the plant matures. It produces yellow to orange-yellow flowers followed by fleshy reddish-purple fruits.
- Indoor/Outdoor Use: Best suited as an outdoor succulent plant for spacious gardens, rockeries, boundaries, and drought-tolerant landscape areas.
- Care: Prefers warm, sunny conditions and well-draining soil. Like other Opuntia cacti, it performs best when the soil is allowed to dry between waterings.
- Benefits: Hardy, drought-tolerant, highly architectural, and excellent for adding bold cactus form and texture to dry landscape designs.
