Cochineal Nopal Cactus

The Opuntia spp., commonly known as Cochineal Nopal Cactus, Nopal Cactus, or Prickly Pear Cactus, is a hardy succulent valued for its flat paddle-shaped stems, drought tolerance, and distinctive ornamental form. Some Opuntia species are also historically associated with cochineal insects used to produce natural red dye.

• Appearance: Features broad, flat green pads with small spines or glochids, and may produce bright yellow, orange, red, or pink flowers followed by colourful prickly pear fruits.
• Indoor/Outdoor Use: Best suited as an outdoor succulent plant in sunny, dry areas. It works well in rock gardens, xeriscapes, borders, and drought-tolerant landscapes.
• Care: Prefers full sun, very well-draining soil, and infrequent watering. Allow the soil to dry thoroughly between waterings and avoid waterlogging.
• Benefits: Highly drought-tolerant, low-maintenance, architectural, and useful for adding strong texture and structure to dry landscape designs.
